Description
SWEENEY, C.J.-- In Thompson v. St. Regis Paper Co., 102 Wash. 2d 219, 685 P.2d 1081 (1984), our Supreme Court created an exception to the general rule that employees are terminable at will. According to Thompson, if an employer creates an atmosphere of job security and fair treatment with promises of specific treatment in specific situations and an employee is induced to thereby remain on the job, the employer may be bound by those promises. Thompson, 102 Wash. 2d at 230. Michael Bott was fired by his employer, Rockwell International. He sued Rockwell claiming that Rockwell's policies and procedures made such promises and that Rockwell broke those promises before and in the course of firing him.
